Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This move from the DNC to withhold the release of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race seems remarkable but entirely predictable. Averse to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body behaves closer to a publicity machine rather than an electoral entity committed to building a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Climate of Conformity

Unwilling to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has continued within that legacy throughout this past year. Releasing the findings might have shown that the leadership are interested to promote open debate about the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there's nothing to be learned from the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a rationale reportedly given to justify concealing the document.

Key Issues an Analysis Could Have Addressed

A genuine analysis of substance would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Decision to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence by a party leader to seek re-election, alongside a very late step-aside, is viewed as robbing the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: During a time of economic anxiety, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to powerful financial backers and not managing to address the effects of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: An unwillingness to adjust a policy position regarding the situation in Gaza reportedly led to driving away key demographic groups, especially with youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Allegiance: Research shows a significant drop-off in votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold aligns with a longstanding habit of evading uncomfortable facts. It echoes a situation in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's insistence on running for re-election right up until a catastrophic televised debate compelled an exit.

Concurrently, overwhelming numbers within the party's base were consistently telling surveyors that they opposed that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Concerns

An honest autopsy could probe issues about where money went, such as how much money were directed to party strategists as well as advertising contractors during a campaign that burned through a staggering war chest in a short period.

A Broader Implication

At its core, the blockage surrounding this report is symptomatic of a deference to the existing power structure who engineered an unsuccessful national race. The message to the party's base – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – is that they do not have a right to know the lessons party chiefs have learned from a report drawing from extensive interviews.

A party incapable to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to escape the cycle which was so helpful to the rival party.
