Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
