Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no new information.
