A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
