Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
